US VS. THEM

As we all know, it’s common practice to classify others according to traditional, well-established social categories. Often this process comes down to thinking in terms of "us" and "them", a habit based in artificially generated assumptions about the necessity for conflict as well as a sense of our own superiority. The tendency to create such divisions is usually driven by lack of empathy and understanding for those who are different from us in race, age, nationality, culture, sexuality, religion or social status. It’s a lot easier to pigeonhole someone as "different" and exclude them than to put yourself in their shoes and try to understand. In the "Us vs. Them" section, we look at this dynamic and the variety of ways that contemporary cinema addresses it. At a time of widespread discussions about diversity, the subject seems to be particularly relevant, particularly since we live in an era that places individuality and the cult of self above all else. The films presented in this year's special Mastercard OFF CAMERA section invite viewers to take a closer look at the kinds of conflicts they are familiar with as well as others that they may have never fully contemplated
