The main character in Mark Jackson's third feature is Hafsia, a young Arab woman who decides to visit a childhood friend in New York after a long separation. The friend has settled down in the United States, assimilating into the culture and realizing her version of the American dream. But to Hafsia it all feels completely foreign, and not only because of the language barrier. She’s utterly unable to find her bearings in this reality, so she decides to trade the hustle and bustle of city life for a cabin near the forest. The gallery of characters she meets there evoke a sense of anxiety, alienation and uncertainty. These feelings are skilfully conveyed by French actress Hafsia Herzi, in the lead role. This complex portrait of a lost woman is also an opportunity for Jackson to reflect on the concept of American identity and the narcissism, prejudices and stereotypes associated with it.
