In Sébastien Pilote’s film, a sleepy industrial town in Canadan Quebec doesn’t have much to offer teenage Léonie (a brilliant Karelle Tremblay). She’s impatient for high school to end just so she can try something new and cut loose from her controlling mother and stepfather. The aching feelings of alienation and lethargy that keep bringing her down start to lift when she meets an older man named Steve. Like Leonie, he seems completely unsuited to the surrounding reality. It all starts with simple guitar lessons; a bond based on mutual trust and understanding evolves over time in the midst of a world that neither of them can understand. Using coming-of-age film tropes, the Canadian director paints an engaging portrait of sympathetic outsiders right from the start. Beautifully shot and filled with atmospheric music, it’s the kind of film that lingers in your memory.
