Denmark, circa 2025. A year after a bloody bomb attack, public sentiment is growing increasingly radical. It’s best seen in the public sphere, where ultra-nationalist politician Martin Nordahl, leader of the National Movement party, skillfully fuels anti-immigration sentiments—mostly by attacking the Arab minority. This is the uncertain and hostile reality that 19-year-old Zakaria must face. The teenager, increasingly fearful for his family’s safety, decides to join a radical Islamic organization. There he meets Ali, and they quickly become friends. Angered by the everyday injustices they see all around them, they decide to take action. But in their youthful rage and lust for revenge they fail to see that they might be pawns in a much larger scheme. This dark, claustrophobic thriller is set in Denmark, but it could take place in any European country. Sons of Denmark marks the feature debut for Ulaa Salim, a director well versed in the short film format. He taps into the discussion about one of the greatest challenges of modern Europe: radicalism on both sides, and growing hatred and intolerance towards everything that’s different.
