Jacek Borcuch’s new film takes place in Volterra, a small town in Tuscany. Everyone knows and respects everyone here. Maria, a Polish poet, Nobel Prize laureate and moral authority, lives at the top of a hill; her life is peaceful, its rhythms synchronised to the Italian countryside, until she receives the shocking news of a tragic event. While accepting the title of honorary citizen of the city, still in an emotional state, she makes a controversial, politically inflammatory speech: in one moment, she crosses the line. She soon suffers the consequences: she becomes a persona non grata in the town. In a script co-written with the acclaimed Polish writer Szczepan Twardoch, Borcuch takes a stand in the discussion surrounding the refugee crisis. At the same time, he doesn’t impose his views on the audience: Dolce Fine Giornata is a film about questions rather than declarations. Krystyna Janda’s wonderful performance as Maria is a real highlight of the film, and earned her the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival.
