Ratna is a young widow who leaves her small village for the giant metropolis of Mumbai. Her journey is connected to a desire to help her loved ones, but it’s also supposed to be her chance for a new beginning. She’s employed as a servant by a well-off Hindu family. She’s charged with assisting their son Ashwin, who’s about to get married. But things get complicated, and the planned wedding is cancelled when it turns out that Ashwin's fiancée had an affair. As time goes by and Ashwin and Ratna spend more time with each other, a bond develops between them, one that goes far beyond the initial principles they had agreed upon. Although they belong to two different worlds in the eyes of the traditionally hierarchical Hindu society, they’re able to find a connection. Rohena Gera's debut film, based on her own screenplay, is a warm, nuanced story of love in a world full of rules and limitations. A contemporary twist on the Cinderella story, with emancipation as its subtext.
