“Good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives.” These words have followed Kena and Ziki everywhere, since they became teenagers. But the two girls want more from life. They dream of travel, adventure and true love, not just a boring existence as obedient wives out in the country. The love they dream of comes out of the blue, and the object of their desire is equally surprising: the two girls fall for each other. This forces them to realize just how conservative their society really is. Director Wanuri Kahiu came to the same realization when Rafiki was banned by the Kenyan censors. But she wasn’t discouraged—she sued the government, took it to the Supreme Court and won. She describes her directing style as “Afrobubblegum” (also the name of her production company)—a combination of fun, fierceness and vivid colour that represents the African soul.
