Anne (a phenomenal Trine Dryholm) leads the stable and peaceful life of an exemplary middle-aged woman: two daughters, an ideal husband, a job at a prestigious law firm and a home in a picturesque corner of the woods, decorated with style and taste. And yet she experiences a sense of dissatisfaction that she can’t seem to define. Her mundane, everyday reality is suddenly disrupted when her stepson, a reckless, rebellious teenager named Gustav, shows up and moves in. He certainly doesn’t fit neatly into the picture of one big happy family, and maybe that’s exactly why Anne feels increasingly fascinated and drawn to him. The second feature film by Danish director May el-Toukhy is largely built around the complex and ambiguous figure of Anne. Queen of Hearts is a seemingly cold and removed study of the shocking and disturbing relationship between a woman of a certain age and a young man, which becomes increasingly compelling with every passing minute.
