Estrella and her daughter Leonor share a special bond. They spend most of their time together, with no secrets between them. Estrella is sure things are never going to change, but her teenage daughter has different plans. She would like to become independent as soon as possible. Under the influence of a friend she meets at a party, she dreams of going to London and starting a new life for herself there. But the clash between her own dreams and her mother’s disappointment might prove especially hard on her. Spanish director Celia Rico Clavellino focuses primarily on the perspective of the mother—the one who feels abandoned. She shows how difficult this transitional moment can be, as a beloved child becomes an adult and starts to spread her wings. Journey to a Mother’s Room is a story about attachment as well as the need for some distance. Subtle and unassuming, made with simple resources, and at the same time wonderfully authentic.
