Reinaldo Marcus Green’s debut feature is an illustration of a solitary act of violence rippling through a close-knit community. The act in question is the death of a black man, shot by a police officer during a routine stop-and-search in Brooklyn. The story is told from three vantage points. The first is that of Manny, a bystander who has recorded the event on his phone. It soon turns out that a recording showing police brutality and racial discrimination spells trouble both for the hero and his family. Police work, dangerously verging on corruption and the code of silence, is in turn the daily bread of Dennis – the second protagonist—a black NYPD officer. His loyalty towards his employer, as well as his faith in justice, are put to the test time and time again by the aforementioned stop-and-searches, to which even he is constantly subjected because of the colour of his skin. The key event of the film is the last straw for him—and for the third hero of the film, a teenager named Zyrick, a promising baseball player. Each of the protagonists of Monsters and Men has a lot to lose. Each is facing a moral dilemma, trying to answer the question of who they really are.
