The winner of last year’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize is written and co-directed by Valeria Bertuccelli, who also plays the lead. Robertina, a distinguished, award-winning theatre actress, is preparing for the imminent premiere of her new play—a one-woman show—but that’s the last thing on her mind. With rehearsals in full swing and her face on posters that are about to be distributed all over the city, Robertina goes through an existential crisis. She’s having marital problems, plus her best friend is terminally ill, so she tries to spend as much time with him as possible. Tackling this difficult life situation and a demanding theatre project at the same time brings up a great deal of fear and anxiety in her, but the real question is whether it can it be used as a creative force. The Queen of Fear not only takes a revealing look from backstage at the world of the artist, but also adopts a highly subjective point of view toward the confused leading woman, guiding the viewer through a reality where art and everyday life are impossible to separate and can’t help but affect each other.
