The titular character of Aleksander Pietrzak’s debut feature is an orderly and methodical arts teacher with an exceptionally complicated relationship with his father. The state of their relationship has a lot to do with the father’s lifestyle—he’s a painter who loves to party. The father’s second heart attack is a turning point, and his refusal to change his lifestyle pushes Julius to find a way to rein him in and put limits on his behaviour. A seemingly perfect remedy for the younger man’s problems appears when he happens to meet Dorota, a carefree veterinarian. Little does he know what trouble is right around the corner. Pietrzak returns to the subject he touched upon in his short film Me and My Father. A difficult and even toxic relationship between father and son becomes a lens through which to observe reality. Full of absurdities and seemingly meaningless accidents, but full of human warmth and plenty of humour, Juliusz represents an emerging filmmaker jumping in at the deep end: comedy is the toughest genre to pull off.
