Summer is a carefree black 17-year-old who spends her time dancing and posting photos on Instagram. When a teacher asks, “What is identity?” in class, Summer doesn’t realize how soon she will have to redefine her own sense of self. It all happens because of her mother, a celebrity meteorologist and a recent convert to Islam, who insists that Summer follow in her footsteps. Reluctant and defiant at first, over time she discovers there might be something for her in that religion after all—especially when she’s around her classmate Tahir, who she obviously fancies. The points of view of mother and daughter clash violently. The mother interprets faith in a strict and austere sense, while Summer values her freedom and independence. Jinn is a compelling coming-of-age film about conflicts—from the personal to the ideological. First-time director Nijla Mu’min charges the story with youthful energy, passion and enthusiasm.
