Greek director Nikos Labôt shows a skill and sensitivity worthy of his more experienced colleagues in his debut feature, a simple, unassuming story of emancipation and rediscovering oneself. The difficult realities of recession-stricken Greece are revealed from the perspective of 37-year-old Panayiota, who leads the placid, unremarkable life of a housewife in Athens. The chance to gain some independence comes unexpectedly to a woman whose daily reality has been circumscribed by the four walls of her apartment: she gets hired to do maintenance at a nearby mall. What starts out as just a means to shore up the household finances quickly becomes a gateway to the outside world for Panayiota. She becomes a role model, gains financial independence, and starts to come out of her shell and socialize. But the autonomy she loves could be lost as quickly as it was gained. Her Job is a captivating tale of emerging from a cocoon, and Marisha Triantafyllidou’s performance is its absolute highlight.
