The second film by Costa Rican director Neto Villalobos is the story of a young man named Mancha (Arturo Pardo) who works as a deliveryman, cruising the town on his motorbike. He spends his days off hanging out with friends, a crew of fellow delivery-bikers. He dates a pretty woman named Clara who works at a local monastery, with a bunch of dogs as her faithful companions. Mancha’s carefree existence changes drastically when Clara gets a job offer on a nearby island and wants him to move there with her. Around same time his bosses disappear without paying him or his friends. Running out of options, Mancha ends up selling ice cream and starts to feel the winds of change, but he feels totally unready. Full of absurdist situations and visual comedy, Villalobos’s film depicts male friendship and the dilemmas stemming from the inevitability of looming adulthood. The characters in Helmet Heads aren’t prepared to say goodbye to their boyhood just yet, and they try desperately to hold on to their seemingly carefree reality.
