The protagonists of Dan Sallitt’s film are best friends Mara and Jo. They know each other inside out, and it’s only natural—their friendship goes all the way back to their school days. They’re as different as night and day: Mara is the responsible one who has it all figured out, while Jo is a magnet for trouble. We get brief glimpses of their everyday life in Brooklyn, fleeting moments that don’t allow a clear point of entry. New jobs, new partners, new hopes: their friendship—or the dynamics that describe it—is the only constant. One phone call from Jo and Mara is on her way, ready to drop everything to help her lost and increasingly depressed friend. Sallitt examines the unique bond between the two women with great subtlety and sensitivity. Intimate conversations play out against the din of the big city, as the film attempts to get to the bottom of what friendship really is: can it be truly unconditional?
