Lou and Chantal are best friends. They’re both sick of the small town they live in and want to run off to New York as soon as possible. Their ambition, their rebellious nature, even their self-confidence are cause for criticism in a place where nobody wants to disturb the status quo. The two girls will soon realise that shaking up the social order takes a lot of grit, perseverance and determination, especially after what happens the night before their planned departure to New York. The only way to face adversity is to stick together. In its narrative techniques and its vision of the world, Canadian director Jasmin Mozaffari’s feature debut is reminiscent of Andrea Arnold’s work—Firecrackers has a similar energy and intensity to the renowned American Honey. The performances Mozaffari draws from her lead actresses, Michaela Kurimsky and Karena Evans, are truly impressive.
