The end of an athlete’s career, regardless of the sport, is a particularly difficult time. The everyday routine of training and competition disappears; the interest of from the media and fans wanes; the adrenaline that used to fuel each day is gone. In Time Trial, we accompany David Millar, a British cyclist, as he approaches this time of life: the camera follows him through his last competitive season. His dream is to end his rich career on a high note by getting a good result in the most prestigious of all races, the Tour de France. The problem is that the 37-year-old, who once specialised in time trials, no longer has the physical strength to compete with younger cyclists. Finlay Pretsell’s documentary film is not only a story about the growing frustration of not accepting the body’s limitations—it’s also a uniquely up-close experience of what it’s like to take part in a cycling race. Through the lens of a camera attached to Millar’s bike, we ride in the middle of the peloton with him; we climb every hill and hurdle down every steep descent, in one of the most immersive sports documentaries of recent years.
