Following a series of mysterious missing-child cases, Alicja Tabor, a headstrong journalist, returns after many years to her hometown of Wałbrzych to meet the families of the missing children and solve a mystery that the local police have been unable to crack. In her private investigation she uncovers dramatic events that began to unfold many years earlier. In her quest to find the truth, Alicja will have to face both a new threat and the one she has been running from for all of her adult life—the mystery of her own childhood and her family’s dark secrets. In time, the grim criminal intrigue turns out to involve the missing children, a wartime past, the legend of a hidden treasure and the fate of Alicja herself. Borys Lankosz’s film is an adaptation of Joanna Bator’s well-known novel of the same title—a fairytale for grown-ups that avoids genre pigeonholes and simplistic definitions. A gallery of vivid characters, a dank and stuffy atmosphere created largely by Marcin Koszałka’s cinematography, an original director’s vision—it all adds up to a rich and highly sensuous film.
