The directorial debut by the acclaimed American cinematographer Benjamin Kasulke is the bitter-sweet tale of an emotional love triangle maturing over the course of time. April (a superb Hannah Marks) spent her last two years of high school dating Nick (Dylan Sprouse, the twin brother of Cole, star of Riverdale). She experienced her first real make out session, the ups and downs of love, and a final break up with him. Unexpectedly, a few months before college is about to start, she befriends Nick’s new girlfriend April (Liana Liberato), and spends more and more time with her as a special soul-sister bond develops. The girls discover they’ve got much more in common than just the object of their former and current affection. Kasulke reimagines the typical narrative patterns of romantic comedies, traditionally involving straight couples, onto a dynamic duo of young women. Marks, who is also a co-writer, masterfully captures the nuances and dramatic turns of a female friendship, seen here through the prism of a type of platonic romance usually reserved for male film characters.
