A. T. White boldly blends film genres from psychological drama to sci-fi horror, in one of the most interesting and ambitious debuts on the American independent film scene in the past year. The protagonist of Starfish is Aubrey, a young, independent woman struggling to come to terms with her best friend Grace’s death. In an attempt to grieve properly, but also to ease the pain, she breaks into Grace’s apartment to go through her things. But the morning after a night spent in her friend’s bed isn’t what she expected. What she sees at first is too much for her to handle. Empty streets, a city on fire, people attacked by an unknown ominous force. The world she knows is heading towards disaster and only Aubrey can do something about it. Especially since in the flat she finds recordings left by Grace that contain enigmatic clues. At times frightening, at times disorienting, Starfish has a rare ability to hold you in utter suspense.
