Sarah has way more on her plate than your average 15-year-old. In addition to school, she has taken it upon herself to provide and care for her family, in particular her depressed mother who rarely gets out of bed. To make ends meet, Sarah has to work all sorts of odd jobs. Lack of time and a very different set of life problems from her peers make it difficult to connect with other teens. Out of the blue, she finds an outlet for her frustration—something that helps her to forget, if only for a moment, the grey reality of her British seaside town. Sarah becomes fascinated with stand-up comedy, where she can get her problems out of her system using her dry sense of humour. First-time director James Gardner uses simple but highly evocative means to paint the story of a young character forced to grow up too soon. He couldn’t have done it without a brilliant performance by Liv Hill, also making her screen debut.
