American director Rob Grant demonstrates just how original a film adaptation of a literary classic can be. For his Harpoon is a modern variation on none other than an Edgar Allan Poe novel. It’s about three castaways who draw straws to decide who will be sacrificed so the others can survive. The inciting incident involves the titular harpoon, Richard’s birthday present from his girlfriend Sasha and best friend Jonah. The excited protagonist wants to try out the new toy right away, so a day-long trip to sea is organized. Everything goes according to plan until the boat’s engine gives out and it turns out that the supplies were left ashore. The heavy atmosphere is intensified by the contrast between the cramped space the characters have to move around in and the vastness of the ocean that surrounds them. To make matters worse, certain deep, dark secrets have yet to surface… Friendship slowly gives way to jealousy, good judgment to insanity, and an innocent comedy turns into a bloody thriller.
