Like Michael Haneke did with Funny Games, renowned Chilean director Sebastián Leilo has decided to shoot a scene-by-scene remake of his film in the U.S. The film is Gloria (2013), which brought him a lot of recognition, including three Berlinale awards. Gloria (Julianne Moore) is a divorced, independent woman in her 50s who longs for some excitement in her life. Her days are filled with work and family responsibilities; her evenings are spent dancing in nightclubs for middle-aged singles. Her stable but not necessarily happy life is thrown off balance when she starts an affair with a man she meets at a bar. As often happens, hope is mixed with uncertainty, euphoria with fear of disappointment. Lelio has once again created a soulful, bittersweet portrait of a mature woman striving to live life to the fullest while she can. And although she doesn’t always succeed, it’s hard not to root for her.
