Alicja doesn’t remember her past and has no idea who she is. She was found after going missing for two years, and she doesn’t want to go back to a life she has forgotten. She doesn’t remember her feelings for her husband and her son. As time passes, fragments of memory resurface, bringing up vague and disconcerting images from the mystery of her past. New questions keep coming up for her. What secrets are lurking in the dark? Will her budding feelings towards her “new” husband and son allow her to understand her past and rebuild happiness for herself and her family? Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s film, inspired by a true story, is built on doubts—not just about the past, but also about the future. The title of the film references a disorder known in psychology as a dissociative fugue. The oppressive atmosphere felt by Alicja (played by Gabriela Muskała, who is also the screenwriter) is enhanced by the film’s moody cinematography and sensuous sound design.
