Rose, the central character of Extra Ordinary, knows all too well what a drag it can be to carry on a family tradition. In the debut feature from writer/directors Mike Ahern and Aenda Loughman, Rose has inherited a knack for harnessing supernatural powers from her tragically deceased father, a spiritualist famous for his TV programme that revealed ghosts living among us mortals. She does her best to hide this talent in her everyday life, working as a driving instructor. That is until Martin, one of her students, asks her for help with the meddling of his deceased wife, who’s unable to let go and keeps reminding him about unpaid bills and telling him what their dog is suffering from. The situation is also a bit too much for Martin’s teenage daughter. This extraordinary (pun intended!) story also features an eccentric one-hit-wonder musician desperate to get back into the limelight, even if it involves a pact with the devil and a virgin sacrifice! Extra Ordinary is a delicious genre mash-up, combining horror, comedy and romance. Paradoxically, this crazy and energetic Ghost Busters-esque story has a lot of insight about living humans as well.
