Everybody wants something from Portuguese soccer superstar Diamantino. His father, who is also his coach and his biggest fan, considers him the greatest living sports legend. His greedy and selfish sisters see him as a bottomless source of cash. For the fans he’s an idol—a divine creature. Everything changes the day that Diamantino misses a deciding goal in the World Cup, leaving his country in mourning. Meanwhile his private life starts going through tumultuous changes, starting with his father’s sudden death, through a series of mysterious biological procedures Diamantino is subjected to, and finally his decision to adopt a refugee orphan. Awarded the Critics’ Week Grand Prize at last year’s Cannes, Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt’s film is simultaneously a bitter social satire on modern Western Europe, a comedy of manners about a lost man, and a thriller with science-fiction elements. This unique cinematic cocktail reveals deep and unexpected connections between the Old Continent going through a massive crisis and cultural norms around masculinity.
