Andrej (Matej Zemljic in a superb performance), a handsome boy on the verge of adulthood, is forced to appear in court, summoned by his own parents. They’ve become unable to deal with the teenager’s violent behaviour, so the judge sentences him to a youth detention centre. Andrej quickly learns to navigate the complicated hierarchy of the place and gets involved in some minor gang activity, led by the charismatic Zeljko. Weekend trips to Ljubljana, filled with parties, alcohol, drugs and petty crimes, become routine for this band of angry and belligerent boys—but eventually their emotions are unexpectedly channelled into a twisted and ambiguous relationship. The feature debut from Slovenian director Darko Štante is partly inspired by his own experience of working in a correctional facility for so-called “troubled youth”. Many of the actors in the movie are non-professionals. Consequences is not only a fascinating and highly original iteration of the coming-of-age drama—specifically the sub-genre about angry and alienated teens—but also an intriguing representation of masculinity that alternates aggression with unexpected tenderness.
