Francesco Patierno’s documentary is an unusual urban symphony, in which a series of violent acts play out with brutality and lust for revenge. This is the reality of Naples—a city known not only for its football team, which once featured Diego Armando Maradona at his peak, but also for the organization that perfected the art of organized crime: the Camorra, a mafia that has made brutality, contract killings and paid protection its trademarks. Using previously unpublished archival material, Patierno looks closely at the rapid growth of the syndicate from the 1960s to the 1990s, from its humble beginnings controlling contraband to the times of Raffaele Cutolo, the charismatic leader who brought criminals together and turned them into a major paramilitary and economic force. Camorra delves deep into the soul of the inscrutable capital city of Campania—a peculiar place even for Italians.
