Louis Garrel, one of the most talented and popular French actors, directs his second feature and also plays the lead, a journalist named Abel. He’s in a seemingly happy relationship with the beautiful and charming Marianne (Laetitia Casta), but she suddenly leaves him for his best friend Paul and gets pregnant with Paul’s child. Eight years later Paul dies and fate brings the former lovers back together. As if that wasn’t plenty of turmoil and emotional entanglements, Paul’s little sister, Eve (Cesar Award-nominated Lily-Rose Depp), who has been in love with Abel since childhood, isn’t feeling too happy—to say the least—about the reconciliation. Marianne’s cunning eight-year-old son is also none too pleased, and he will do whatever it takes to make life difficult for Able and Marianne. Awarded Best Screenplay at last year’s San Sebastian IFF, Garrel’s film plays with romcom conventions with intelligence, self-awareness and a light touch. This witty emotional landscape of modern Paris is brought to life with brilliantly written love games and intrigue, with a superb cast—it’s a great pleasure to watch.
